Mission Statement

Kokrobitey Institute, situated in Ghana on the West Coast of Africa, was founded to expand our sense of a world worth knowing about to include Africa and her people.

Our mission is to offer study programs and implement local and sustainable development projects focused in Environmental Studies as well as Art and Design that view these disciplines through the lenses of the cultural, social, historical and natural resources of Ghana.

Programs serve both the local and International communities at large with the goal of investigating traditional knowledge and technologies for their relationship to modern development.

Since its founding in 1992 and the construction of its campus in 1995/96, Kokrobitey Institute, in affiliation with individuals, secondary, tertiary and professional institutions, has designed and hosted Teacher Training programs, African Arts, Literature programs, Governance & Democracy institutes, and workshops in Building and Art & Design.

The programs, ranging from two weeks to semester long, afford participants the opportunity to live and learn at the Institute’s tranquil seaside campus. Here they are among a diverse, culturally conscious community where respect for individuals, community and the world’s environments and resources are central to the learning experience.

The Institute invites individuals and institutions to extend their learning to include the resources of Africa by partnering with Kokrobitey Institute.

A cornerstone feature of learning at Kokrobitey is the sensitive integration of the cultural arts (literary, musical and visual) throughout the core activities of workshops, lectures, field trips and community service. At Kokrobitey, students are able to share in rich traditions and historical events that connect the cultures and economies of Africa to the rest of the world.

Careful program planning ensures that all requirements of the participant(s) and/or credit granting institutions are achieved during the course of study. The Institute’s residential facility houses up to 30 persons, providing a dynamic forum for study and quiet introspection with the goal of having a unique, personal experience that refines one’s understanding of what it means to be a world citizen.
