Education- When we say ‘education’ we refer to the art of teaching and learning. We are passionate about developing (1) the teaching tools and (2) the learning spaces that inspire curiosity and creativity. 

 Design- Our design process is intentional, interdisciplinary and informed by sustainability.  Whether creating fashion or furniture, graphics or landscapes, educational content or community spaces— we depart from the intersection between function and innovation.

FEES

  • All interns pay their travel & medical fees associated with getting to & from Ghana.

  • A Month-Long Internship - $800 fee covers room & board, 3 meals a day (except weekends (brunch & dinner), extracurriculars, and travel associated with KI projects.

INTERNSHIP APPLICATION

Interns are required to work with ongoing projects at the Institute that relate to their expertise/background, while simultaneously carrying out their own project interests.  We are looking for interns with the specific skills below, however, we are not limited to these positions, we welcome many different types of designers, artists, educators, and researchers.

INTERNSHIP POSITIONS

EDUCATION INTERNch

The education design intern will join our dynamic team of artists and researchers working collectively on the KI Renaissance Project. The goal of the Renaissance project is to expand our understanding of what it means to be literate by chronicling the knowledge of traditional culture. The project includes four key focus areas: environmental literacy, holistic education, values and principles, and social entrepreneurship. The content material will be shared digitally and in learning content for school children, the general public and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • A background in Education, specifically primary and secondary levels

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

RESEARCH INTERN

The research intern will join our team working on the Kokrobitey Institute Renaissance Project, conducting research across our four focus areas: environmental literacy, holistic education, values and principles, and social entrepreneurship. Specifically, we are interested in the ways that traditional African intelligence in these areas is relevant to the global discourse on sustainable development. The research intern will interact and work with people in the community, and will also work closely with the education and graphic design intern to develop educational materials or products.

Qualifications

  • Excellent qualitative and quantitative research skills 

  • Able to synthesise and clearly communicate information

  • A background in design: Industrial, Furniture, Glass, Textiles, Ceramics, etc

PRODUCT DESIGN INTERN

The Kokrobitey Institute prides itself on an ethical and resourceful design approach. We are looking for an intern who thinks creatively about design, and who thrives in an interdisciplinary studio setting. Working across our glass, wood, metal, print-making, and sewing studios, they will support our design and fabrication teams in product development. The product design intern must be “hands-on,” with practical skills and a strong background in design. This position requires that you are able to communicate ideas clearly through drawings as well as writing. You will gain experience in studio and project management.

Qualifications

  • Excellent in CAD: Rhino or Solid Works 

  • Sketching skills 

  • Excellent in Adobe Suite 

  • A background in design: Industrial, Furniture, Glass, Textiles, Ceramics, etc

eFINE ARTS INTERN

We are looking for an intern who thinks creatively about art and design, and who thrives in an interdisciplinary studio setting. They will work closely with teams on various projects and focus on how to story-tell and communicate knowledge and information in a visual way. An intern must be “hands-on,” with practical skills and a strong background in Fine Arts. This position requires that you are able to communicate ideas clearly through drawings as well as writing.

Qualifications 

  • Excellent concept ideation skills 

  • Excellent sketching skills

  • A background in design: Printmaking, Illustration, Animation and Media

 

eneENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AND DESIGN INTERN

The environmental design/research intern should have an interest in ecology, sustainability, and climate change, with the ability to communicate and synthesise complex concepts and systems in effective ways. The intern must be self-driven, willing to explore the social and natural environment of the natural landscape (Kokrobitey/Ghana), in order to  broaden their perspective on how people traditionally live within these diverse ecosystems. This intern will work with the Institute’s organic gardens as well with the OKO forest project using their research to design systems, educational materials, and/or products for different stakeholders. 

Qualifications

  • Excellent research skills (qualitative and quantitative)

  • Excellent in Adobe Suite 

  • Any knowledge or background in ecology, farming or gardening is beneficial

  • A background in Design or Fine arts 

GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN

The Kokrobitey Institute is looking for a graphic designer for our social media and website to expand our market capability. The intern graphic designer should be a creative, willing collaborator able to design informative literature, brochures, and visually compelling graphic content. The graphic design intern will work alongside the education team and researchers to help synthesise and display information data in an effective visual format. The intern will also engage with our Fashion Program designing layouts and look books for our fashion collection.

Qualifications

  • Excellent in Adobe Suite: specifically Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop

  • Any UI/UX skills is beneficial

  • Any marketing skills is beneficial  

  • A background in graphic design, illustration 

UI.UX INTERN

The Kokrobitey Institute is looking for a UI/UX intern to re-design our website and to help expand our market capability. This role would include designing the UX architecture, wireframing and flow, and re-branding of the website.

Qualifications

Excellent in Adobe Suite: specifically Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop

  • Experience in UI/UX and web design

  • Experience using Figma, Adobe XD   

APPAREL DESIGN INTERN

The Kokrobitey Institute apparel designer intern will work alongside the fashion team exploring dynamic and creative processes in building systems and designs for the WOTE fashion collection. The apparel design intern should be a dynamic collaborator able to experiment with different recycled materials, as well as with natural fibers, exploring innovative ways to create new forms and systems of production.

Qualifications

  • Excellent in Adobe Suite: illustrator and Photoshop 

  • Sketching skills

  • Excellent sewing and pattern making skills

  • Visual eye for texture, colour, and shape 

  • Can create mood and fabric swatch boards 

  • A background in apparel/textile design

 

RESIDENCIES

Residents should come equipped with professional experience and purpose.  We understand that every person and project is unique, we can tailor a live/work scenario to your needs, whether that means equipping you with a quiet space to write, a furniture workspace with weekly production sessions with our craftspeople, or a clean design studio, we are happy to explore your needs.

At a basic level, we provide personal living and working accommodations, with 3 meals a day provided.  We tailor your Residency Program to your project needs, for example, if you want to have a welding technician work with you twice a week, or if you would like to work in our printmaking and batiking studio spaces. 

If you specifically want to work on developing a product for manufacturing with us, please share your idea, quantities, deadlines, & any design/materials needs.  We would be happy to host you for a prototyping workshop to develop your ideas.
